Stamp Me Alternatives for Cafes
An honest look at Stamp Me for Australian cafes: what the three tiers actually cost, what the Lite plan really includes, where Stamp Me genuinely beats us, and the single question that decides between them. From the team behind Back Again.

If you have been looking at digital loyalty for an Australian cafe, Stamp Me is probably the first name you found. They have been around a long time, they are well known in the local cafe scene, and a fair number of your customers may already have their app on a phone.
We are the team behind Back Again, which is one of the alternatives, so read this knowing exactly where we sit. We have tried to be straight about the places Stamp Me is the better answer, because there are several and pretending otherwise would waste your time.
What Stamp Me costs
Three tiers, from their pricing page, with a 30-day free trial:
- Lite: $49 a month AUD
- Pro: $79 a month
- Elite: $199 a month
Worth correcting a common assumption here, including one we had wrong in an earlier post: the Lite tier is not a stripped-back stamp card. It includes unlimited push notifications, Scratch & Win, Birthday Club and Lapsed Customers campaigns, a single location, unlimited users, and basic activity insights. SMS is limited at that tier.
What Pro adds at $79 is mostly depth rather than function: full activity insights, full member data, phone support, the complete marketing resource library, and more SMS. Useful if you want the reporting. Not necessary to run the program.
One thing to watch: publishing more than two active stamp card programs carries a $15 one-off setup fee each.
For comparison, Back Again is $39 a month flat with no tiers at all, and free until you have 50 customers.
The difference that actually decides it
With Stamp Me, your customer downloads the Stamp Me app from the App Store or Google Play, then finds your cafe inside it.
With Back Again, they hold their phone near a sign on your counter and a web page opens with the stamp already on it. On the first visit they enter an email address so the card is theirs. After that, every visit is just the tap.

That sounds like a small convenience difference. It is not, and here is why.
Picture the moment. Your customer has ordered, they have paid, there are three people behind them, and their coffee is thirty seconds away. Your barista says "we've got a loyalty app, you should grab it." Now count what you have actually asked for: open the App Store, search a name they half heard, pick the right result, wait for a download on cafe wifi, open it, find your cafe, sign up.
Ninety seconds on a good day, in a queue, for a free coffee six weeks out. Most people say "I'll get it later." Later does not happen.
This is the number that decides whether a loyalty program is worth anything. A richer toolkit applied to a shorter list loses to a plainer one applied to most of your regulars. Stamp Me's push notifications, SMS and gamification are all real, and every one of them only reaches customers who completed the install.
We have written up the mechanics of the tap approach, including where it falls short, in cafe loyalty without an app.
Where Stamp Me is genuinely better
Five situations where we would tell you to pick them.
You want to send SMS. Stamp Me does. Back Again is email only, with no SMS on the roadmap. If text messaging is central to how you talk to customers, that is a real gap on our side and it is not close.
You want push notifications. An installed app can push a message to the phone whenever it likes. A web card cannot, and that is the one structural advantage an app holds over our approach. We use email instead, which is slower and easier to ignore. Worth knowing before you decide rather than after.
Gamification suits your style. Scratch & Win and surprise rewards are a genuinely different way to run a program. We have no equivalent and are not building one.
You need flexible stamping methods. Their StampPod counter device, wearable Stamp Tags for baristas and single-use OneStamps printed on packaging give you options we do not, particularly if you are takeaway-heavy or want stamps to travel on a coffee cup.
Your customers may already have the app. This is the strongest argument against everything we just said about installs, so it deserves stating plainly: if Stamp Me is common among cafes near you, some share of your regulars already has it, and for those people the install objection disappears entirely.
You want several stamp card programs. Multiple cards on one account is theirs. We run one card per cafe.
Side by side
| Feature | Back Again | Stamp Me |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | $39 flat | $49 to $199 |
| Feature tiers | ✗ | Three |
| Free tier | Until 50 customers | 30-day trial |
| Customer installs an app | ✗ | ✓ |
| Requires a specific POS | ✗ | ✗ |
| Push notifications | ✗ | ✓ |
| SMS | ✗ | Limited on Lite |
| Gamification | ✗ | ✓ |
| Win-back campaign | ✓ | ✓ |
| Birthday campaign | ✓ | ✓ |
| Multiple stamp card programs | ✗ | yes, $15 each beyond two |
| Timed offers on the customer's card | ✓ | Not documented |
| Google review prompt after a stamp | ✓ | Not documented |
Neither column wins outright, which is the honest shape of this comparison. Ours is shorter and cheaper with no install step. Theirs is longer with more ways to reach people who joined.
Two things we include that are worth naming
Not because Stamp Me lacks them at every tier — we have not verified that — but because they are the parts of Back Again that do work most cafes do not expect from a loyalty product.
A Google review prompt the moment a stamp lands. The screen a customer sees straight after collecting a stamp is the most positive second of their visit, and that is when we ask. Reviews are the highest-return marketing most cafes have and almost nobody asks systematically. We went through the whole approach in how to get more Google reviews.
Timed offers on the card with a live countdown. Pick an item, a price, the days and the hours, and it appears on every customer's loyalty card for exactly that window. Good for a 3pm pastry clearance, and it is the only lever in a loyalty program that can create a visit rather than enrich one. More on that in filling the dead hours.
Other alternatives
Stamp Me and Back Again are not the only two options. Square Loyalty is the obvious choice if your till is already a Square terminal, though its pricing rises as the program gets more popular. Loopy Loyalty runs on Apple and Google Wallet passes from $25 a month USD. Loyverse bundles loyalty into a free POS if you are willing to switch tills. We compare all five, with pricing links, in our best loyalty system for cafes roundup.
How to decide
Three questions, about a minute:
- Will your customers install an app for a free coffee? If you genuinely think most of them will, or if Stamp Me is already common around you, that objection is gone and their longer feature list is yours to use.
- Do you need SMS or push notifications? If yes, pick Stamp Me. We do not have either and we are not going to.
- Do you want the program running before you decide? Ours is free until 50 customers, so you can watch real enrolment happen rather than estimate it inside a 30-day trial.
If SMS and gamification matter to you, use Stamp Me. If the thing you are quietly worried about is whether anybody will actually join, that is the problem we built for.
Back Again is a tap-to-stamp loyalty card with no app for your customers to download, no POS integration to configure, and the win-back emails, birthday emails, review prompts and timed offers included at one price. Free until you have 50 customers, then $39 a month AUD flat. See how it works or the pricing.
